Where Karastan Carpets Come From

Persian carpets have long been recognized as the the world’s finest. Iran is the largest producer of handmade carpets, with 75% of the world’s total output.

In Ancient times, it was not uncommon to have a huge styled Karastan carpet with a ornamental scene depicted for the courts of Persia. Later in the Islamic period, sheep were bred to produce the finest wool for rugs. Traditionally, every part of the Persian carpet is handmade from natural ingredients. It can take years to make a large carpet.

Wool or silk is tied around long stretched threads of cotton, called warps. Eventually, more rows are tied and the design comes into being. Knot count can be an important determinant to a rug’s price. Anywhere from 16 to 550 knots per square inch can influence the price of  a Persian carpet. Karastan area rugs are style in the same way.

When you invest in a Karastan carpet, you can get the quality of a Persian carpet. If you really want a piece of art, it’s a good idea to hang your carpet on the wall, where it can be admired without anyone stepping on it. You should also shelter it from sunlight, which can damage the silk or wool’s color.
